The discussion about Video Lessons is going on for some time now. People are talking and experimenting, but so far, there was no proof that it works. Following example shows, that Video Lessons via the Internet are not a joke, not wishful thinking and not a microscopic extracting game.
Now they are a reality!

Before I give you the the video example, let's just briefly talk about all involved factors:
SUBJECT
An brief excerpt of a panflute lesson. Student (Susi Tschupp) and Teacher (Joeri Murk) sitting 4750 Miles apart .
COMPUTER EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE
Both parties use the same equipment and software:
-G5 dual processor 2.0GHz
-iSight Camera
-Wide MAC Screen 23"
-iChat Software with MAC 10.3.4 and a MAC iChat account.
-Cable Modem
INTERNET CONNECTION
Both parties have cable service.
Joeri Murk (Switzerland) has 3Mbps down and 800Kbps up
Susi Tschupp (Florida, USA) has 3Mbps down and 512 KBps up.
ACTUAL CONNECTION SPEED AND FRAME RATE
Our iChat session had an average connection speed of 380Kbps and peaks up to about 420Kbps. Frame rate: both sides constantly at 30 fps.
SIGNAL QUALITY
Good Video quality. Can be blown up to full screen.
Excellent Audio Quality (mono)
Both audio and video are 100% stable with no interruptions!
Feedback suppression worked 100%.
PICTURE SIZE AND RESOLUTION
Picture is very sharp even at full screen. This is because of the relative high bandwitdth and smart video processing of iChat. No video artifacts. Processor load around 15%.
TRANSMISSION DELAY (LATENCY)
The one way delay has been measured at 190ms (milliseconds!).

Here finally is the movie. You need the Windows Media Player 9 to play it properly. If you don't have the Player, download it from the Microsoft Webpage.

An amazing way to learn the pan flute--be the student and teacher near or far, the Internet can help students who cannot otherwise get lessons.
Photo below of student Susi Tschupp of Clearwater, Florida, USA and teacher Joeri Murk of Zurich, Switzerland, approximately 6,600 km (4,100 miles) away!
-------------------- May your pan flute journey be filled with passion, simple observation, and friendship.

That's a smooth video. Our video chats are low frame rate with frequent freezes and would not be suitable for lessons.
What interests me more though is the audio. We've had problems with feedback, echo, cutting in and out, etc. In fact we've given up on the sound and have video chats accompanied by typing.
Where were the microphones and speakers in your setup? Is it tricky to adjust the volumes so both sides can hear everything without echo? I only heard one note echo back. The sound from Joeri was very clear.

This video session is the best I have seen so far. Very interesting. I'm just trying to think how I would translate this into a piano lesson. Again your panflute people are real trailblazers!

This is an outstanding setup, impressive video and amazingly clear sound. This project opens the door to many new creative activities over the internet.
Questions: 1) How high does the bandwitdh have to be, to get a decent video and audio. 2) I have a Time Warner cable connection. Do you think that would work? 3) Do I really need a MAC account? 4) Can I use another camera? 5) I try to live connect with iChat to another sound studio. What do you think about that?

Congratulation, this is an impressive movie and a real progress in video chat.
You should make this movie available to all interested educators, teachers, instructors and similar people. I call it a direct hit for those concerned.

Dear Jim,
Delayed feedback, echo, chops etc. are mainly a question of a good connection. I had many chats with AIM and iChat users with lower band-widths (70-150Kbps). I had the same problem you are referring to.
To have a real good and continuous sound, your connection speed needs to be above 300Kbps.
The positioning of the speakers and microphone is also an vital factor. Don't position the iSight camera (with the built in mike) in a direct line with the speakers. You see on the picture that my iSight is above the right screen a little bit set back in the hatch so there is no direct audio line with the speakers. I can turn the speakers up to a very good volume without noticing distracting feed back. But if you turn the volume too high, you might encounter some echo or feed back.
Keep in mind that above rules apply for both ends of the chat.
